Question by : Have I developed panic disorder?
Hi! I really need your help. Over the years I’ve gotten the fear of vomiting (emetophobia). In 9th grade, I was fearless. I could care less if I was kidnapped, murdered, or raped, I just didn’t want to throw up. I also didn’t even care about dissecting our squids/starfish in biology 10th grade.
However, this year (12th grade) I noticed that my emetophobia was getting kind of bad. Every time anyone would say “My stomach hurts” or something along those lines I would lose focus on everything. I would look for an escape route if somebody did throw up, and I had to work to calm myself down and refocus. I started to think that these might be mini-panic attacks.
This year in December, a classmate of mine died in a car accident. The moment I learned in first period, I got really really dizzy and faint, and felt like I was going to throw up. Every since he died, I noticed myself not being able to handle death the way I did before. I could still care less about if I were to die, I don’t fear death, but it’s when I see OTHER people reacting to death, that’s what makes me panic. For example, a friend of the boy who dies is in my homeroom, and they would often talk about him, and she would start to cry. During one of these times, I got REALLY dizzy, could feel my blood pressure drop, and I almost passed out. I’ve been near her other times too when she’s talked about him and I’ve started to feel that way, but I try to talk to my other friends or move away somehow.
I’ve also realized that I’ve been having mini-panic attack like episodes just in biology class learning about body organs and systems that I don’t feel comfortable with. We’re going to start dissecting fetal pigs tomorrow and I’m worried. Also, I came across two symptoms of panic disorder, “derealization” and “depersonalization”, which I thought were just normal, even though they made me feel really weird, but now that I see that it’s not normal that kind of scares me too.
Do you think that I’ve developed Panic/Anxiety disorder? I’m sick of going through all of these heart tests because my mom won’t listen to me when I tell her I’ve been having panic attacks.

Hi there,
Firstly you’re not alone. It definitely sounds like anxiety, and I suffered the same symptoms.
The reason that you’re getting these types of feelings is that your ‘fight or flight’ response has been triggered (which is the cause of our anxiety). This makes our body kick out adrenaline which makes us feel like this. It also makes us see everything as a perceived threat which makes us think like that.
What I would do is treat the cause of the anxiety.
There are 3 things you can do to help yourself. Firstly, speak to a counselor that you trust and get along with. Don’t be afraid to try different ones to find one that you like. This will help with the thinking side of the issue.
Secondly, go and get some natural therapy to help you eg. acupuncture or chinese herbs to help balance your body. The reason you’re feeling like this is because your body is out of balance and your ‘fight or flight’ response has been triggered, causing you to feel like that. These therapies will help to relax that and help you feel better.
Thirdly, do some regular meditation. Meditation helps to calm the nervous system. You can look up free guided meditations online to help you with that.
Hope that helps!
